Kickstarter is the more popular crowdfunding site with a stronger backer community, higher success rates among projects, and more exposure to potential backers for projects. Indiegogo’s strength lies in its international focus and the presence of flexible funding options. Let’s go through Kickstarter vs Indiegogo.

Kickstarter has stricter rules about what you can use to promote your project, but they are very clear about their policies. On the other hand, Indiegogo doesn’t provide any information on how it selects projects to put up on its site. It also has more flexible funding options. So if you want to give all the funds you raise to charity, for example, Kickstarter won’t let you do that. On the other hand, Indiegogo might.

Kickstarter believes in crowdfunding as a project-funding mechanism rather than a preorder sales platform, so it will deny projects where there is even a whiff of a preorder involved. Indiegogo is more open to this type of project, so it might be a better choice if you have a gadget or new technology that people will want right away.

There are some other things you should know about each of these two crowdfunding sites before making your decision:

Kickstarter vs Indiegogo

1. Kickstarter first launched on April 28, 2009, and its first project was the Elevation Dock, a beautiful new docking station for Apple’s iPhone product line. The project raised $75,000 in 30 days. . It has helped fund over 80,000 projects since then.

2. Indiegogo first launched on September 9, 2008. The site is owned by an American company based in San Francisco with operations in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia. It is free to use for both project creators and backers.

3. Kickstarter has successfully funded more than 80,000 projects since its launch. Only 44% of projects succeed in reaching their funding goals, but those that do raise an average of $20,000.

4. Since its launch in 2008 Indiegogo has helped fund over 200,000 projects and helped raise more than $550 million dollars for them. 50% of the total funds raised on the site go to successful projects and an impressive 81% of these projects reach their funding goals.

5. Most people use Kickstarter to fund creative projects, but it is also a good place to find new technology and gadgets. Indiegogo does not allow any type of project that offers a product as a reward, including both “pre-orders” and “InDemand” campaigns, but its flexible funding option gives you the option of keeping whatever funds are raised on the site even if you don’t reach your funding goal.

It is very interesting how different these two platforms are. If you like the idea of getting a product in your hand even if it’s not perfect and donating all your funds to charity, then Indiegogo might be the obvious choice for you. On the other hand, if you want to help fund creative projects and connect with a great community of backers, Kickstarter is the clear winner.
